With the intellectual ‘stance’ and the emotional allegiance go the readiness to act (the behaviour element): to attack at the drop of a hat in the one case; to defend fiercely and if necessary at great sacrifice in the other. Since each of the three components act and react on the others, they tend to form a more or less consistent pattern, although the degree of consistency in any particular person is always a matter for inquiry. In general, attitudes are both fairly coherent and, so to speak, cemented in, being thus particularly hard to dislodge and change.

2 Learning theory represents one of the three general approaches to socialization that might have been drawn on here. I set aside Freudianism as having the least to offer on adult socialization. Symbolic interaction theory might well have been used, especially in discussing the significance of the primary group, but when one incorporates it as an alternative or supplementary interpretation, the text becomes unnecessarily complicated.
